Ένα αυτοβιογραφικό βιβλίο για τις εμπειρίες ενός νέου αμερικάνου στον Β' ΠΠ στο μέτωπο του Ειρηνικού (Pacific Theater of Operations - PTO).
Περιγράφει λίγα πράγματα για το παρελθόν και εκπαίδευση του. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του βιβλίου φυσικά είναι αφιερωμένο στον πόλεμο και τις επιχειρήσεις που πήρε μέρος. Μερικά πράγματα για τις μεταπολεμικές του απόψεις/εμπειρίες ως βετεράνος και πιθανότατα ως ασθενής από PTSD (τότε shellshock).

Δεν είναι όμορφο ή εύκολο βιβλίο.
Σε πολλά σημεία είναι γροθιά στο στομάχι, κυρίως επειδή αυτά που περιγράφει δεν είναι φτηνό ΣΟΚ ενός θρίλερ βιπερ, αλλά πράγματα που είδε/έζησε και τα περιγράφει με απλά λόγια, δίχως μεγάλες φανφάρες.
Επίσης δεν δίνει γελοίες αμπελοφιλοσοφίες για το τι εστί πόλεμος που γράφουν διάφοροι βετεράνοι και μη, αλλά τι ένιωσε ως μέσος άνθρωπος που έζησε την Κόλαση και ήταν αρκετά τυχερός να γυρίσει στο σπίτι του. Αν και δεν γλύτωσε τα, ψυχικά κυρίως, τραύματα.
Μεγάλη εντύπωση πως άλλαξε η "μάτσο" προπολεμική του νοοτροπία μεταπολεμικά.
Π.χ. κάτι που μου έμεινε και βλέπω ότι ήταν από τις πιο "δυνατές" γραμμές:

This, I realized, was the difference between war and hunting. When I survived the former, I gave up the latter.

Δεν έχω να γράψω πολλά, πέρα ότι είναι δικαίως ίσως η καλύτερη βιογραφία που γράφηκε για εμπειρίες στον Β' ΠΠ.
Πάνω από όλα ήταν άνθρωπος, δεν έβγαλε τον εαυτό του ως ήρωα, δεν ωραιοποίησε τον πόλεμο και δεν ήταν τρίχας να γράφει ηλιθιότητες και ηθικολογίες.
Το κατατάσσω άνετα στο ίδιο επίπεδο με το All quiet οn the western front.
Φυσικά και το συστήνω, αν και ΔΕΝ είναι ένα ανάλαφρο βιβλίο. Πρέπει να προετοιμαστείς για τις περιγραφές...
